Resources inspired by Critical Learning Incidents

Some of the most frequently used resources in BRiTE are the scenarios. The scenarios are (and were intentionally) quite general, however there is scope to add more to show a wider range of issues and teaching contexts. Inspired by critical incidents written by pre-service teachers, further scenarios have been developed. For example,

"I'm just a student teacher"

It is the first day of school and your first day of professional experience in a pre-primary class. As soon as the doors open, every parent seems eager to introduce themselves and their child to the classroom teacher. Obviously not all being able to speak to her at the same time, parents approach you to introduce themselves and their child. Anxious and not knowing quite what to do, you hear the first words coming out of your mouth are … “I am just a student teacher”.

"Think on your feet"

Your first literacy lesson is scheduled to start at 8:50 am and you are feeling very prepared. You have the lesson plan in a file with you and all the resources set up around the classroom. You open the laptop to connect it to the interactive white board as you have seen your mentor teacher done in the welcome with the children. To your dismay, the laptop won't work. You try again but still nothing and it crashes every time you try. Time is ticking away and you feel the panic rising as your entire introduction is based around the using the interactive whiteboard. As you are frantically trying to think of another way you could implement the introduction your mentor teacher asks you, "what are you going to do now?”
